Under close supervision, and in a training capacity, is responsible for technical work of moderate difficulty in law enforcement or investigative duties; performs related work as assigned.
Deputy Recruit is the trainee level withincumbents occupying the classification prior to their completion of an Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) academy. Deputy Recruits normally work in a training capacity supervised by a training officer or academy staff. Work methods and results are under constant review by supervisory personnel through observation, discussion, written and proficiency testing and results achieved. Upon completion of the academy and subject to departmental approval, a Deputy Recruit may be promoted to the Deputy Sheriff class. Except under special circumstances, a Deputy Recruit who fails to successfully complete the academy in which they are enrolled, and promote to Deputy Sheriff, will be terminated from the Deputy Recruit classification.
The ideal candidate has solid experience in detention center operations, supported by a disciplined military background and practical law enforcement expertise. They bring strong situational awareness, proven reliability, and the ability to perform effectively in high-pressure environments.

Typical Duties

• Attends and obtains Certification by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) academy to learn the principles, methods and techniques employed by the Deputy Sheriff class
• Attends indoor and outdoor classes and training sessions for preparation as a Deputy Sheriff
• Performs rigorous physical training
• Learns to drive a motor vehicle under normal and emergency conditions safely
• Learns to demonstrate command presence in conflict situations
• Learns to write clear, comprehensive and accurate reports, legibly and with correct grammar and spelling
• Learns to understand, interpret and apply criminal and civil laws
• Learns use of various firearms and first aid methods
• Performs related duties as assigned
Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to: driving; working with and around other public officials, citizens and staff; dealing with interruptions; writing, writing weapons qualifications, telephones, etc. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, hazards including mechanical, burns, electrical, explosives, chemicals, heights and others and exposure to adverse atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases and others.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be U.S. citizen (Ariz. Admin. Code § R13-04-105(A)(1) (2016), 21 years of age at time of appointment, high school graduate (or G.E.D.).
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must obtain certification from the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) within one year of employment with the Coconino County Sheriff's Office. Must pass AZPOST prescribed physical agility test. Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Must submit to a background search and successfully pass drug screen, physical and polygraph examination prior to employment.
